PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island prison guard union officials say Gov. Gina Raimondo’s plan to temporarily close the high security unit at the state prison could lead to instability.

The Democratic governor’s administration previously said the current high security unit at the Adult Correctional Institutions is poorly designed and a cause of increasing costs. The Providence Journal reports that Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers President Richard Ferruccio argues the unit is a deterrent to prison violence and riots.

The administration’s plan calls for temporarily sending about 50 inmates now held at the high security center to prisons in other states and reassigning nearly 40 other inmates to lower security units.
