LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol has arrested a suspect in a weekend hit-and-run death.

Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said troopers arrested 33-year-old Ashley Burkhard of West Columbia on Sunday and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Burkhard is charged with hitting 21-year-old Davontaye Washington as he was walking on a road late Saturday in the Red Bank area of Lexington County. Troopers say the woman drove away. Washington died at the scene.

She is being held in the Lexington County jail awaiting a bond hearing. There was no record of an attorney for her yet.

The maximum penalty for leaving the scene of an accident involving a death in South Carolina is 25 years in prison.
