ST. LOUIS (AP) - A girl who initially wasn’t expected to survive a St. Louis shooting that left her parents and another man dead said they “didn’t do nothing” before a judge sentenced the gunman to life in prison.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Deniya Irving was just 7 in June 2017 when Jerome Leon Buress Jr. shot her in the head. He was convicted in October of a string of charges, including three murder counts, for killing Deniya’s parents, 24-year-old Jessica Garth and 27-year-old Derrick Irving, along with a second man, 37-year-old Julian Hayes.
During Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Deniya said Buress “shot my mama and my dad.” She recalled lying across her then 5-year-old sister, Deaira, to protect her. Deaira told Buress that, “I don’t like that you took away my family.”
