SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont animal welfare officials say they are looking to encourage pet registration with incentives.
Although April 1 is the deadline across much of the Vermont, people in many areas often skirt the rule. South Burlington’s city clerk tells WCAX-TV that only 30 percent of dogs were registered last year and less than 10 percent of cats.
South Burlington says it is naming a new Top Dog and First Feline picked from among the licensed pets after the deadline. The winning pets will get a host of donated goodies.
City clerk Donna Kinville says pet registration will help in case bites need to be investigated or to help protect people against rabies.
