NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Lee’s office is declining to answer questions surrounding why the Republican has not called a meeting of the Capitol Commission to address the bust of a Confederate cavalry general and early Ku Klux Klan leader on display in the Tennessee Statehouse.

Laine Arnold, Lee’s spokeswoman, told The Tennessean she would “follow up at a later time” when asked this week about the commission.

Arnold had told reporters earlier this year the governor was busy creating his budget proposal, but said Lee planned on appointing new commission members.

Lee has not done so since taking office.

The Capitol Commission is one of the few entities that has authority to consider removing or adding context to Nathan Bedford Forrest bust.

The bust has been at the center of multiple protests.
