OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A report by an independent monitor overseeing reforms in the Oakland Police Department says an officer was fired and several were suspended for engaging in a high-speed vehicle chase that left one person seriously injured.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the employees were found to have violated the department’s policy barring high-speed pursuits of people considered nonviolent.

The monitor’s October report says police officers violated policy and gave inconsistent statements to supervisors regarding a 13-mile, 16-minute high-speed chase.

It says officers were pursuing a vehicle with a “known juvenile” and two passengers they believed to be armed when the fleeing vehicle crashed. One of the passengers suffered injuries that left him confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak.

The names of the fleeing driver and the passengers have not been released, nor have the names of the police officers involved
