Pope Francis denounced President Trump’s family separation policy on the U.S.-Mexico border and supported the position of U.S Catholic bishops, Reuters reported Wednesday morning.
“It’s not easy, but populism is not the solution,” the pope told Reuters.
The pontiff said populists were “creating psychosis” over immigration and warned that Europe would face grave consequences from crackdowns on migration.
Francis tweeted additional messages of support for immigrants on Wednesday.
A person’s dignity does not depend on them being a citizen, a migrant, or a refugee. Saving the life of someone fleeing war and poverty is an act of humanity. #WithRefugees @M_RSection

We encounter Jesus in those who are poor, rejected, or refugees. Do not let fear get in the way of welcoming our neighbour in need. #WithRefugees @M_RSection

Joe Vásquez, the chairman of United States Bishops Committee on Migration, sent a letter to every House representative. The message focused on one of the Republican bills on immigration reform coming to a vote and emphasized that Mr. Trump could end family separation unilaterally, according to a USCCB press release.
The archbishop of Galveston-Houston also released a statement denouncing the policy.
“While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral,” his statement read.
