ATMORE, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Corrections says two inmates at an Atmore correctional facility have been wounded in a fight.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports the two inmates were wounded Saturday and have since been released from a hospital. This fight comes just after a report by the Montgomery-based nonprofit organization Equal Justice Initiative said Alabama prisons are the nation’s most lethal.

Just this month, one inmate was stabbed to death and another was critically injured in a separate stabbing during a fight that injured two others. Department of Corrections reports and releases say 18 inmates have been killed in state prisons since October 2016.

Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton has said he’s unsure how the nonprofit’s report was produced, but says the prison homicide rate is a top concern.
