Teen’s body found in South Carolina river near coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of a teen who fell from a boat in a river near the South Carolina coast.

News outlets reported that Charleston County officials said the body of 17-year-old Joseph Chomyn of the Isle of Palms was found Monday morning near a landing on Johns Island.

Capt. Robert McCullough with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says officials were called to the Stono River around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Crews from the state agency, as well as the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and St. John’s Fire Rescue had searched parts of the river Sunday.

Chomyn was a student at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston.

The coroner’s office has not yet determined how the teen died.
