DENVER (AP) - One Colorado hiker who spent three nights in the backcountry after climbing a 14,000 (4,267 meters)-plus foot mountain survived with the help of rationed granola bars, a boiling pot and thoughts of his family before being rescued Tuesday. Another missing for two nights in the San Juan Mountains dressed only in a tank top and shorts was able to flag down a scenic railroad maintenance car the same day.
Thirty-six-year-old Shuei Kato (SHOE’-ee KAHT’-oh) of Silverthorne was found after a helicopter located a fire he had built on Missouri Mountain. Kato told KUSA-TV that he wanted to return to his wife and children so he was determined not to die.
Like Kato, The Durango Herald reports that 23-year-old Melikai Hesse tried to keep himself awake and moving at night to prevent hypothermia in the cold weather.
