DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina sheriff is asking state law enforcement officers to investigate the apparent suicide of a teenager in the county jail.

Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said in a news release Friday that he’s asked the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of 17-year-old Uniece Glenae Fennell, who died Thursday at the county detention facility.

The release says a detention officer found Fennell hanging from a bed sheet attached to a cell window. It says the medical team tried to revive Fennell, who was pronounced dead at the detention center.

Andrews says the detention staff had completed the hourly checks of Fennell’s cell. He says she was not under suicide observation.
