The basketball world was stunned over the weekend as ESPN reported that Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving had asked to be traded, and fellow NBA superstar Damian Lillard weighed in on the situation Monday.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, the Portland Trail Blazers point guard seemed surprised that anyone would leave a team that had been to three straight NBA Finals.
“Who wouldn’t want to go to the Finals every year?” Lillard said bluntly. “I think [the Cavaliers] have been to the Finals the past three years. I would love to do that.”
The ESPN reports indicated Irving is tired of playing second fiddle to LeBron James. When asked about James, Lillard said he sees no reason why anyone would want to stop playing with the Cavaliers’ star forward.
“Just watching from the outside, you see how easy [James] makes the game for everybody else,” Lillard said. “I’m not sure what it’s like playing with LeBron the person, but the player … I don’t see why anybody wouldn’t want to play with him.”
