HAWTHORNE, Fla. (AP) - A north Florida woman has been arrested on several felony charges for allegedly operating what investigators are calling a statewide dogfighting ring.

The Gainesville Sun (https://bit.ly/2i4DFSn ) reports that 44-year-old Ruth Renae Bryant of western Putnam County was arrested Friday on three animal fighting charges. It wasn’t clear if Bryant had a lawyer to speak for her.

Bryant owns the property where sheriff’s deputies discovered dogfights going on in a wooded area last December. Deputies say about 100 people were in attendance, with two dogs found in a fighting ring and 19 others nearby.

Most of the dogs were eventually released to rescue groups that offered them for adoption.

Authorities say additional arrests are expected.
