PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A man shot and wounded by Paterson police after he allegedly fired at them during a confrontation is now facing five counts of attempted murder.
Passaic County prosecutors said Sunday that 37-year-old city resident Dereen Wofford also faces weapons charges stemming from the incident that occurred Friday afternoon at a city apartment building.
Authorities say a woman there reported a domestic violence incident and five responding officers confronted Wofford, who allegedly wouldn’t let anyone in or out of the apartment. Police say Wofford fired a handgun toward the officers as they entered the unit, and one officer returned fire and struck Wofford.
Wofford was treated for injuries to his shoulder and leg. The woman and the officers were not injured.
It’s not known if Wofford has retained an attorney.
