LIBBY, Mont. (AP) - A northwestern Montana man has been convicted of deliberate homicide in the beating and strangling death of his estranged girlfriend in Libby.
The Western News reports (https://bit.ly/2vZuNF2 ) 42-year-old Trevor Mercier was convicted Aug. 10 in the death of 30-year-old Sheena Devine, whose young daughters found her dead on Oct. 6, 2016.
Mercier’s defense was that he had argued with Devine the night before and had put her in a “sleeper hold” that left her unconscious. He said he did not intend to kill her and that he should have been charged with negligent homicide.

However, a coroner testified that it only takes 10 to 15 seconds for a “sleeper hold” to render someone unconscious compared to the three to five minutes it takes to kill someone.
Mercier’s sentencing is set for Oct. 10.
