LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - A Lewiston non-profit group will receive more than $185,000 from the federal government to expand its outreach services for homeless youths, runaway children and families in crisis.
Maine U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King say the money is coming from the federal Department of Health and Human Services to help New Beginnings in Lewiston.
New Beginnings works with children who live in high-poverty urban and rural areas in central and western Maine.
The senators say the organization made nearly 2,000 contacts last year through street outreach. It also served more than 500 young people in its drop-in center and placed 86 percent of homeless youths in permanent housing.
New Beginnings executive director Chris Bicknell says the grant will allow the organization to serve hundreds of children.
