TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - A project to restore the Boardman River in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula is getting a boost.
The Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has agreed to contribute $500,000 toward costs associated with removing the Boardman and Sabin dams. The money would go toward environmental costs before and after removal.
The authority’s Deputy Director Jean Derenzy tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle (https://bit.ly/2eFE4ch ) the work includes soil sampling and stabilization along with removal or restoration work. Removing the dams is part of a larger project to restore the Boardman River.
Arsenic in soil samples taken from the two dams’ former pond areas exceeds the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s residential direct contact standards. Barium and selenium levels also exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency screening standards.
