Former D.C. schools chancellor Michelle Rhee formally took herself out of the running to head the Department of Education in the Trump administration.
In a tweet Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Rhee, who led the D.C. school system from 2007-2010 under former Mayor Adrian Fenty, said she appreciated the opportunity to share her thoughts on education with the president-elect.
It was widely speculated that Ms. Rhee was on Donald Trump’s short list for education secretary. That speculation increased after she and her husband — Sacramento Mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson — met with Mr. Trump over the weekend.
Ms. Rhee also addressed critics who said she should not have met with Mr. Trump because of his derogatory comments about immigrants, women and Muslims.
“Interestingly, many colleagues warned me against doing so. They are wrong. Mr. Trump won the election. Our job as Americans is to want him to succeed. Wishing for his failure would be wanting the failure of our millions of American children who desperately need a better education,” Ms. Rhee tweeted.
