NEW YORK — Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper is one of three finalists for the National League MVP award from teams that failed to make the playoffs.
Harper is joined by Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced Tuesday. The last MVP from a club that did not reach the postseason was the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols in 2008.
Kansas City Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout, who won the award last year, are the American League finalists for MVP.
Winners of all of baseball’s major awards will be announced next week.
The Cy Young Award finalists in the NL are the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, who won last year, and Zack Greinke, and the Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta.
The Oakland Athletics’ Sonny Gray, the Houston Astros’ Dallas Keuchel and David Price, traded from the Detroit Tigers to Toronto during the season, are the finalists in the AL.
Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor and Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano are up for AL Rookie of the Year.
In the NL, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, San Francisco 49ers third baseman Matt Duffy and Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Jung Ho Kang are finalists.
The Texas Rangers’ Jeff Banister and the Twins’ Paul Molitor, each in their first year, join A.J. Hinch of Houston as finalists for the AL’s top manager.
In the NL, the contenders are The New York Mets’ 66-year-old Terry Collins, Joe Maddon of the Cubs and Mike Matheny of the Cardinals.
