HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Legislation that would prohibit Connecticut pet shop owners from purchasing cats and dogs from breeders who’ve violated federal animal welfare regulations is moving to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s desk.

The House of Representatives voted 143-0 in favor of the bill, which also requires the Department of Agriculture commissioner to develop a standard of care for in-state dog and cat breeders. The bill already passed the Senate.

Rep. Brenda Kupchick of Fairfield said many people wanted an out-right ban on selling dogs and cats in pet stores. But a task force came up with recommendations to toughen standards and provide consumer protections.
