BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A man who was shot in the police department lobby in Bennington, Vermont, after ignoring commands to drop a knife has been ordered held without bail pending a mental health evaluation.

Gregory Filo pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Bennington Banner reports (https://bit.ly/Jea059) a mental health screener told Judge David Howard the 42-year-old Filo may still be a danger to himself and recommended he be evaluated. Howard agreed.

Filo was shot on April 22. Police said Filo was making stabbing motions at another man and then threatened police.

A Vermont State Police affidavit said earlier that day, Filo went to the department and asked an officer to shoot him. He agreed to speak with a counselor at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
