NEW YORK (AP) - The Society of the Silurians will honor outstanding reporting achievements at its semi-annual Excellence in Journalism awards dinner Thursday evening.
Veteran Associated Press reporter Jim Fitzgerald will receive the Peter Kihss Award. The award is named after a late New York Times reporter who was considered a “selfless, highly skilled” newsman known for generosity as a mentor. Fitzgerald has been with the AP since 1973.
A nine-month investigation by Newsday into misconduct by dozens of Long Island police officers will receive two medallions. They are for public service in the print category and in online investigative reporting.
The breaking news award in print journalism will be given to The Record of Hackensack, N.J., for its reporting on the bridge traffic scandal that has engulfed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
