PHOENIX (AP) - Guadalupe officials hope an amended contract approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors can repair the town’s battered relationship with the county Sheriff’s Office.
Guadalupe pays MCSO to police the streets of the small town of about 6,000 near Tempe.
In 2008, Guadalupe’s mayor squared off with Sheriff Joe Arpaio following an illegal-immigration sweep within town limits.
MCSO’s approach to immigration enforcement and other issues has at times frustrated leaders of the community.
The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/MJdoWc) that the goal of the amendment approved last week is to ensure sheriff’s deputies respect the town’s culture, traditions and residents.
Arpaio says the amendment is a step in the right direction toward mending relations between his office and the town and mutual trust has increased the past few years.
