MCCOOK, Neb. (AP) - A Wyoming man who escaped from Nebraska’s Work Ethic Camp and remained loose for several weeks has been given more prison time.
Drew Steier was sentenced last week in Red Willow District Court, the McCook Daily Gazette said (https://bit.ly/N3B1sJ ). He had pleaded guilty to felony charges of escape and theft. Judge David Urbom ordered that Steier will serve his two sentences of two to three years at the same time.
Last July, Steier scaled the 9½-foot-tall perimeter fence at the camp and made it on foot to McCook, where he stole a car. Authorities said Steier drove until he ran out of gas near Green River, Utah. Steier was subsequently arrested by Evanston police on Sept. 1.
When he escaped on July 5, Steier had served less than a year of an 18- to 36-month sentence for attempted robbery at a bank in Wallace, Neb. Authorities said he and Tracy Black tried to rob the Farmers State Bank in August 2012. Steier went into the bank wearing a ski mask and wielding a BB gun. But Steier fled without any money and drove away with Black, who was waiting in a pickup outside. They were arrested near Imperial about an hour later.
Black also was given 18 to 36 months in prison. Both men are from Evanston, Wyo.
