DENVER (AP) - Police say conflicting statements by a witness has stalled a case in which an Aurora Public Schools employee was arrested for sex assault allegations.

Aurora police said in a statement Monday evening that they were releasing 32-year-old Joel Aaron Stahl, a paraprofessional at Aurora Central High School.

Earlier Monday, police said they had arrested Stahl, and the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s office said Stahl was scheduled for a court appearance Thursday to hear the charges against him.

However, later Monday, police issued a new statement saying they were releasing Stahl from custody based upon what they said were new and conflicting statements by a witness.

They said the case remains under investigation.
