Morgan Freeman, Oscar-winning actor and possibly the world’s most recognizable voice, said that the income gap and race are not related.
In an interview Tuesday with CNN anchor Don Lemon, Mr. Freeman was asked if race plays a part in wealth distributions, to which he responded, “No. No, I don’t. You and I, we’re proof.”
“Why would race have anything to do with it?” “The Shawshank Redemption” actor continued. “Put your mind to what you want to do and go for that. It’s kind of like religion to me, it’s a good excuse for not getting there.”
Mr. Freeman, who was promoting his new Science Channel series, “Through The Wormhole,” discussed the issues with race being constantly portrayed in the press.
Mr. Lemon, who is also black, talked about his struggles with news stories focused on race.
“It seems like every single day I’m talking about race on television, because its in the news cycle,” Mr. Lemon said. “I wanna just go, ’this is over, can we move on?’”
Mr. Freeman replied, “If you talk about it, it exists. It’s not like it exists and we refuse to talk about it. Making it a bigger issue than it needs to be is the problem here.”
