President Obama urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to accept an unconditional ceasefire with Hamas for humanitarian purposes.
In a phone call, Mr. Obama reiterated his “serious and growing concern about the rising number of Palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of Israeli lives, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza,” the White House said.
“The President underscored the United States’ strong condemnation of Hamas’ rocket and tunnel attacks against Israel and reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself,” the statement said.
The Israeli military renewed fighting in Gaza on Sunday, saying that Hamas militants had ignored a 24-hour truce requested by the U.N. by launching more rockets at Israel.
