Marantha Baptist University, a small school in Watertown, Wis., is doing away with its “Crusaders” nickname after almost a half-century because “times change.”

A university official told Fox News that a “global society” is the reason why the Division III college, which also changed the school name from Maranatha Baptist College in December, is on the hunt for a new mascot.

“Times change and we understand that context changes,” Matt Davis, the university’s executive vice president, told Fox News. “Our world has changed since 9/11 and we’ve become a more global society with the Internet. The heartbeat behind this was not political correctness, but expanded opportunities for our students.”

Mr. Davis told Fox that no complaints were received by the school regarding the name change.

One group that welcomed the move is the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“It’s obvious they thought about this. I applaud their effort,” Ibrahim Hooper, the Council’s communications director, told Fox News.
