GROTON, Conn. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Boughton has asked a former mayor of Groton to be his running mate.
Boughton announced Tuesday that Heather Somers has agreed to run with him. They plan to seek the Republican Party’s endorsements for governor and lieutenant governor at the May convention. If they don’t win the party’s backing, Boughton plans to run in the August primary election.
Somers is currently serving her 5th term on the Groton Town Council. She served as mayor for the last two years, creating an energy efficiency task force and a school planning task force to address aging school infrastructure and racial imbalances.
Greenwich businessman Tom Foley, who ran in 2010 with Boughton as the lieutenant governor candidate, is expected to officially announce his candidacy on Wednesday.
