University freshman found dead in her dorm room

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - A freshman has been found dead in her room at the University of Charleston-Beckley.

Local news media outlets are reporting that the young woman’s body was discovered Wednesday afternoon. WVVA-TV quoted Beckley Police Detective Morgan Bragg as saying that the death does not appear suspicious.

A woman who answered the telephone at the Beckley Police Department on Wednesday night referred inquiries to Bragg, who had gone home for the night.

WVVA and WOWK-TV both broadcast a statement from University of Charleston President Dr. Edwin Welch, who called the death “truly a heartbreaking situation.” Welch said the university would comment further when more information is available.

WVVA identified the woman as a member of the UC Beckley women’s basketball team.
