INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The state Senate Rules Committee plans to consider a proposed Indiana constitutional ban on gay marriage next Monday.

A Senate Republican spokeswoman announced Monday that the panel would hear from supporters and opponents of House Joint Resolution 3 immediately following the full meeting of the Senate that day.

The legislative fight over the proposed ban has turned to the so-called “second sentence” of the proposal, which also would ban civil unions. House lawmakers scrapped the civil unions ban last week in a move that could potentially push back a public referendum to 2016.

Supporters of the marriage ban have said they want to see the measure placed back on track for a public vote this November.
