SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah lawmaker wants to let perpetually truant students and their parents avoid legal action if the child maintains a high grade-point average.

Rep. Francis Gibson sponsors the measure, which exempts parents from truancy court if their student is 14 or older and has a 3.5 GPA or higher.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (https://bit.ly/1gD918t ) that Utah school officials can send persistently absent or tardy students to truancy courts, which can order the students to attend class.

If they’re absent or tardy again, students could be arrested for violating the order.

Gibson, a Mapleton Republican, says that shouldn’t happen if the students are doing well in school.

His proposal, which has not yet had a hearing, is pending in the House.
