CEDAR GROVE, W.Va. (AP) - Cedar Grove Police Chief Aaron James Roop is facing misdemeanor assault and brandishing charges in Fayette County.

The 31-year-old Roop is accused of threatening to kill a man last week in Smithers.

A criminal complaint alleges that Roop confronted Derick Haddix in a grocery store parking lot and said he would slice Haddix’s throat.

Haddix and two witnesses told police that Roop was in uniform and kept his hand on his gun during the incident.

Roop denies the allegations. He tells media outlets that Haddix had threatened to shoot his wife and 9-month-old son several days earlier.

Cedar Grove Mayor James Hudnall tells media outlets that Roop remains on the job. He says an internal investigation is being conducted.
