PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island would join most other states in allowing voters to cast a ballot before election day under legislation pending before the state’s General Assembly.
The bill introduced by Democratic state Sen. Erin Lynch of Warwick would allow voters to cast a ballot up to 21 days ahead of an election at locations chosen by local election officials. The votes would not be counted until the polls close on election day.
Lynch says her bill would make voting more convenient and reduce wait times on election day.
Thirty-two states and the District of Columbia already allow some early voting. In New England, Maine and Vermont already allow early voting, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
No vote on the measure has been scheduled.
