Forbes magazine has deemed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg the 13th-richest man in the world, with a net worth of $27 billion.
The mayor was ranked as the 20th richest in 2012, but a $5 billion boost last year brought him up on the global totem pole.
Forbes attributes Mr. Bloomberg’s good fortune to the performance of Bloomberg LP, the information services empire he founded in 1982 after being fired from Salomon Brothers. He owns 88 percent of the company, which made $7.9 billion in last year’s revenues. He also owns at least 10 homes in Manhattan, Westchester County, Bermuda, Vail and the Hamptons, according to the Forbes report.
The mayor recently spent $2 million to defeat former Rep. Debbie Halvorson in her bid for the U.S. House seat vacated by Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. in Chicago.
The reasoning behind the mayor’s PAC was because Ms. Halvorson has an “A” rating with the National Rifle Association. His money did its job, and Ms. Halvorson conceded. She said last week that it was clear outside money played a role in her defeat, the Associated Press reports.
Mr. Bloomberg’s most recent philanthropic contribution was a $100 million pledge to the Gates Foundation to help eradicate polio, Forbes reports.
