President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived at Palais Rohan in Strasbourg a few minutes ago and were greeted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Mr. Obama emerged from his limo and mouthed “bonjour” to the Sarkozys. He and Mrs. Obama then walked to the Sarkozys a few feet away and exchanged greetings. Kisses all around except for the president to Mrs. Sarkozy.
Mr. Sarkozy then brought Mr. Obama over to a crowd of shrieking onlookers behind barricades a few feet away. Given the incredible control over these type of events, these had to be pictures that Mr. Sarkozy, who is facing tough domestic political headwinds, wanted to be played on TV’s all over France.
After talks with Mr. Sarkozy, Mr. Obama is headed to where we are, at Rhenus Sports Center, where he’ll do a campaign-style town hall meeting with a crowd of several thousand mostly young people who are here for a NATO youth summit.
