Sen. Tim Scott, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told the Republican midterm convention in Dallas that Senate Democrats have rolled out “the most dangerous, radical, and frankly weird Democrat candidates in American history.”
Republicans leaned into that message from the start of the two-day gathering, casting the midterms as a choice between a GOP that backs tax cuts, tighter borders and safer communities, and a slate of Democratic contenders who sit far outside the political mainstream.
Pointing to the “dangerous, radical, and frankly weird” candidates he believes Democrats are putting forward this cycle, Mr. Scott started right there in Texas, highlighting Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico’s comments on gender identity and religion.
He held him up as an example of the left’s drift into cultural extremism.
“James Talarico claims there are six genders. He believes God is non-binary. He thinks God needs special woke pronouns,” Mr. Scott said.
Mr. Scott is leading the party’s efforts to defend its 53‑seat Senate majority in a tough environment that has Democrats openly talking about flipping both chambers and putting a hard stop on the Trump agenda.
The South Carolina Republican then turned to Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, warning that the Democrat supports biological men playing in women’s sports. Mr. Scott said former Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio supported President Biden’s open borders agenda.
Mr. Ossoff is favored to win reelection against Rep. Mike Collins, while Mr. Brown is locked in a “toss-up” race with GOP Sen. Jon Husted.
Mr. Scott also pointed to Democrat Abdul El‑Sayed, who is running in a tight Senate race in Michigan against former Rep. Mike Rogers. He said Mr. El-Sayed once described football as rooted in “racist” traditions.
“Have you seen the NFL?” Mr. Scott said, alluding to the large number of minority players. “But worst of all, Abdul El Sayed panders to terrorists.”
“In South Carolina, we call that hogwash,” he said. “In Texas, you got another name for it. It’s horse crap.”
“You can see why this election is so important,” he said. “The only way to keep dangerous, radical, weird out of the Senate is the united Republican Party standing with our president, Donald J. Trump.”
