President Trump’s social media posts taunting America’s neighbors are drawing backlash from their leaders.
Mr. Trump on Monday posted an image of North America — with Greenland and the Caribbean included — covered in the American stars and stripes.
The post, which included no caption, appeared to imply that the U.S. controls the surrounding countries.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded with a social media post shortly afterward.
“In the month of the homeland, we reaffirm that Mexico is [not] nor will be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country,” she wrote, as translated into English by X. “Proudly we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation.”
In September, Mexico celebrates four holidays commemorating important events in its history.
Mr. Trump’s social media post is similar to other attempts to poke fun at neighbors.
The president recently signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
The news was not greeted with enthusiasm by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions [about trade], we can have those discussions,” Mr. Carney said when asked about Mr. Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario. “It’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy.”
Mr. Trump on Sunday also posted an animated clip of himself and Mr. Carney in hockey uniforms, in which he repeatedly swats Mr. Carney with a stick and stands over him as Mr. Carney lies sprawled on the ice.
