Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando, the likely future county executive after winning the Democratic primary race this summer, suffered a heart attack this weekend while playing pick-up basketball.
Mr. Jawando’s office said Monday that the 43-year-old was rushed to George Washington University Hospital, where he had a stent put in.
The surgery went “exceptionally well,” and his doctors expect a full recovery after experiencing the heart attack Saturday.
“Councilmember Jawando and his family are grateful to God for the friends who acted quickly and to the exceptional doctors, nurses and staff at The George Washington University Hospital,” his office said in a statement. “They are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers from neighbors, colleagues, and supporters from across the county and state.”
Mr. Jawando is expected to be discharged later this week and will spend some time recovering at home, his office said.
Current County Executive Marc Elrich, who is term-limited, shared his well wishes for Mr. Jawando in a statement, saying he “hope he takes the time he needs to rest and get healthy.”
“My thoughts are with Michele, their children, and the entire Jawando family,” he added.
Mr. Jawando may modify his schedule, but his office said he will be ready for the November election against Republican opponent Esther Wells.
Mr. Jawando won June’s primary with 40% of the vote, well ahead of fellow Council Members Andrew Friedson, who had 34%, and Evan Glass, who won roughly 22%.
The primary victory largely ensures he will win this fall’s general election in the heavily Democratic county.
