The Washington Commanders haven’t provided a timeline for star quarterback Jayden Daniels to return after he dislocated his left elbow during Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But on Thursday, wide receiver Terry McLaurin implied that Daniels would be back on the field this season.
“It’s only Week 2 and we know Jayden will be back,” McLaurin told reporters.
The veteran pass-catcher didn’t provide any further specifics about his quarterback. Whether McLaurin meant that Daniels would return this season or later in his career was unclear.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn said earlier this week that Daniels would visit specialists on Tuesday and Wednesday to determine his options for recovery. Initial X-rays were negative, but Quinn was quick to confirm the dislocation after Sunday’s game.
Daniels has been ruled out of the Commanders’ upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks. His status beyond that remains uncertain.
“I’ll hold off answering any questions about his timeline to return until we get all the info,” Quinn said on Wednesday. The franchise didn’t offer any official updates on Thursday.
Daniels suffered a nearly identical injury against the Seattle Seahawks last November. The dislocation kept him out of four games. The 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year reaggravated the injury a month later against the Minnesota Vikings, causing the Commanders to sideline him for the remainder of the season.
This year, Marcus Mariota is expected to start for the foreseeable future. The 2015 first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans has spent the past three seasons in Washington, filling in for Daniels across 15 different games.
“We’re just trying to rally around Marcus,” McLaurin said. “That’s just been our focus: to try to come home and find a win.”
