President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran on Tuesday, threatening that if Tehran doesn’t make a deal to end its nuclear program, he will “drive them into hell” and set the country back for generations.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mr. Trump also predicted that Iran will strike a deal after the midterm elections in November, saying that the regime is waiting to see if his political fortunes change after the election.
“I have a big decision to make: Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?” Mr. Trump told the crowd of world leaders. “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?”
“Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope for future generations?” Mr. Trump said.
The president has repeatedly said he would unleash fierce and devastating attacks on Iran if they are unable to strike a deal that would stop Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Mr. Trump also told the crowd at the U.N. that Iran is trying to wait him out to see whether Democrats win the House and potentially the Senate in November, and pressure the president to back off the strikes.
“I believe we will make a deal right after the election because it doesn’t make sense for [Iran] not to,” he said. “They’re waiting to see how I do in the midterm election. What they don’t realize is that I’m not running.
“I gave absolutely no credence to the election when it comes to Iran. It doesn’t even enter my mind. The only thing that does is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
