Christian Castro, the ICE officer whom authorities have accused of assaulting a migrant and lying about it, has been taken into custody in Minnesota.
Officer Castro had been in Texas, where he was fighting extradition to the North Star State.
Hennepin County jail records show he was booked in Wednesday and has a court appearance Thursday afternoon.
He faces four felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime.
Officer Castro was part of the surge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel that went to Minnesota late last year and earlier this year as part of President Trump’s mass deportation agenda.
On Jan. 14, Officer Castro fired a shot from his gun into a home, wounding an occupant, according to a federal judge overseeing the extradition case.
The shooting came after the shooting death of Renee Good and before the shooting death of Alex Pretti, two Americans slain by Homeland Security personnel during confrontations.
Initially, ICE claimed that men had attacked Officer Castro and the shooting occurred as he was fending off the attack.
Officer Castro is now accused of fabricating that story.
The man who was shot in the leg, Julio Sosa-Celis, was initially charged with beating the ICE officer. Those charges were dropped in February after the Justice Department said the evidence didn’t support Officer Castro’s version of events.
Minnesota prosecutors indicted Officer Castro on May 18 and the state issued a warrant for his arrest that day.
He was arrested in Texas on May 29 but released after 90 days, as Gov. Greg Abbott said he was studying the extradition request.
The Republican governor had said that since Officer Castro was ordered by his superiors to leave Minnesota and return to his usual duty station in Texas in January — well before he was charged — he might not fit the definition of a fugitive.
