Weeks after flash flooding killed two men and left one missing, rangers at Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park found remains near where one of the bodies was found.
Rangers found the remains, which have not been publicly identified, in the Crystal Rapid area of the park on Monday, the National Park Service told USA Today on Tuesday.
The bodies have been transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Arizona for identification and autopsy.
The Crystal Rapid area on the Colorado River is a 25-mile hike from Bright Angel Canyon, where the flash flooding occurred Aug. 29, according to Phoenix’s KTAR-FM.
Two men who had been hiking in Bright Angel Canyon were found dead in the days afterward. On Sept. 1, the National Park Service identified them as John Giusti, 46, and Brent Rosenkranz, 42, both from Granbury, Texas.
A third man who accompanied them while hiking in Bright Angel Canyon remains missing. He has been identified as Timothy Allen Smith, 53, according to CNN.
Mr. Smith’s wife, Carrie Smith, said Tuesday on Facebook, “We are aware that the Grand Canyon found remains yesterday. We ask that you continue to pray alongside us! Please be considerate of those handling the situation and those going through this difficult time.”
