Three 40-foot shipping containers fell off a ship into the water at the Port of Los Angeles on Monday.
The containers fell into the water at the port’s Berth 302 during “cargo ship operations” about 11:20 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard said in a release, with one container removed from the water.
The locations of the other two containers have been marked, though they remain submerged, the Coast Guard said. No injuries were reported.
The cargo inside the three containers is listed as nonhazardous in the manifest of the ship that the containers belonged to, the Coast Guard said. Officials did not specify what items or materials are inside the containers, or give a reason why the containers fell off the ship.
Berth 302 is part of Pier 300, the second-largest container terminal at the port, according to the Port of Los Angeles website. Berths 302 through 305 are operated by Fenix Marine Services. The company has not responded to a request for comment.
Traffic at the terminal briefly stopped following the incident but quickly resumed, a Los Angeles Port Police spokesperson told the New York Post.
