LONDON | The Commanders are playing with their third-string quarterback under center against the Indianapolis Colts.

Second-string Marcus Mariota — who was filling in for starter Jayden Daniels — appeared to suffer a knee injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s international tilt in London.

Medical staff evaluated Mariota briefly on the sideline before taking him to the locker room. The Commanders announced during halftime that he would not return.

Third-string signal-caller Athan Kaliakmanis took over for Mariota. The seventh-round rookie from Rutgers had not appeared in a regular season NFL game before Sunday.

The Commanders trailed the Colts 10-6 at the start of the third quarter.
