President Trump and first lady Melania Trump will mark Halloween two days early, opening the White House to trick-or-treaters on Thursday.

The first couple will welcome children on the South Drive. They plan to hand out candy while the U.S. Air Force Strolling Strings play traditional Halloween songs and modern songs, according to Mrs. Trump’s office.

The U.S. Postal Service will run a “BE BEST” postcard station for children, a nod to Mrs. Trump’s signature initiative on child wellbeing and online safety.

The event will run from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and be open to ticket holders, including military families, law enforcement families, foster and adoptive families and administration officials with children.

Halloween is among major holiday events overseen by the first lady.

The White House is typically decked out for Christmas with elaborate decorations, and the first couple hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn each spring.

In past Halloweens, Mr. Trump went viral online for placing candy on the heads of kids whose costumes have a flat surface atop their masks or helmets.

This year’s event will feature apples from Michigan, provided by the International Fresh Produce Association. The National Confectioners Association will provide sweet treats, the first lady’s office said.

The America 250 organization, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Park Service, U.S. Mint and the U.S. Secret Service will participate, and the Center of Science and Industry will provide science-experiment kits for children.
