A fisherman ended up in the waters off the coast of California after his kayak capsized Monday. Local officials suspect a shark was the culprit.

The fisherman, unnamed publicly, was about a mile offshore from Leffingwell Landing in Cambria, California, about 171 miles southeast of San Francisco on Monday morning when something hit the underside of his kayak, the Cambria Fire Department said on social media.

The man got back into the kayak to try to paddle to shore, but the boat had been punctured and had started to take on water. The fisherman successfully swam to shore and the fire department was able to dispatch a boat to retrieve his fishing gear, personal belongings and the damaged kayak, fire officials said.

The man was not injured in the incident.

California State University Long Beach expert Chris Lowe looked at images of the kayak after the incident and said that “it was reasonable to assume the kayak had been struck by a shark,” the fire department said.

Fire officials did not specify what type of shark could have been the culprit.
