The Department of Defense wants every major military base able to operate for 90 days without outside help if a war cuts off power and supply chains.

The bases would need their own power source, water, fuel and ways to communicate. The Pentagon’s Fortress America initiative aims to ensure U.S. forces can continue fighting even if the civilian systems they rely on are disrupted.

The plans include having a small nuclear reactor at the bases, which would allow them to break away from the public grid during a power outage.
