Gurinder Gill had accused ICE of taking his estranged wife, Jasmine, when she went out to get the mail at their home in California.

Authorities say Mr. Gill actually murdered her and made up the story about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to try to deflect suspicion.

Jasmine Gill was last seen Sept. 30 and was reported missing by a cousin on Oct. 4.

Investigators eventually identified burned remains found on Oct. 1 in El Dorado County as Jasmine Gill, and Mr. Gill’s story unwound.

“Once again, ICE is facing baseless slanders and attacks, designed to smear our agents,” said Micah Bock, a spokeswoman for ICE. “The reality is that the brave men and women of ICE go out every day to ensure criminal illegal aliens and murderers do not walk our streets freely, despite a massive increase in threats to their personal safety.”

The Gills were in the middle of a divorce and battle over custody of their 8-month-old son.
