Authorities in Ohio ordered some residents in Toledo to evacuate and others to shelter-in-place after a “hazardous materials release” in the city late Tuesday.

Toledo fire department officials said a chemical that can cause burning of the eyes, nose, mouth and skin left a thick haze covering the 265,000-person city.

“The release is ongoing, and crews continue to monitor the situation,” the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department said early Wednesday in an online statement.
